Walter James Wilkinson

FBI Most Wanted #79

Wanted Flyer 156

On 10 Most Wanted List: 08-17-1954 to 01-12-1955

Wilkinson was arrested in Los Angeles, California by the FBI after a citizen recognized him from an Identification Order in a post office. He was working at a country club as a busboy. During the arrest, Wilkinson commented: “It didn‘t take too long. I know how you guys work.”

Walter James Wilkinson came to the attention of law enforcement when he became the leader of a New York State gang that kidnapped a supermarket manager, robbed him of $2,000, and locked him inside a store freezer.  Employees found the manager who was no doubt cold, but was still able to identify the scofflaws.  Wilksinson and his gang had other charges of aremd robbery and burglary filed against them in upstate New York.  All the members of his gang had been captured by the time Wilkinson was named to the Most Wanted list.

Because of the publicity generated, Wilkinson fled upstate New York and traveled cross country to Southern California.  Once there, he obtained employment as a busboy at the Fox Hills Country Club in Los Angeles.  He had been working for almost three months when a member of the club identified him from a wanted poster and called the FBI.  Agents surrounded him at work.  He was carrying a loaded automatic weapon, but offered no resistance.  His comments to FBI agents were, "It didn't take you too long.  I know how you guys work."
